Staff and facilities

HMR is one of the largest phase 1 units in Europe. We have about 250 staff — 10 physicians (including two very experienced principal investigators who between them have done over 1,500 phase 1 trials), 40 nurses, and 120 graduates or PhDs. Our Medical Director has nearly 40 years’ experience of clinical trials. All of our staff are highly trained. We run our own 18-month, university-based training course in GCP for ward staff, leading to a ‘Certificate in Professional and Personal Development’ (CPPD) by the University of West London.

We’ve brought together a dedicated team to handle all aspects of clinical trials in Japanese subjects. Our recruitment team contact eligible volunteers who’ve registered with us. We also have 10 bilingual ward staff who lead our Japanese bridging studies. Most of those staff have nursing qualifications and up to 10 years’ experience of bridging studies.

Our spacious, recently refurbished and purpose-designed facilities are conveniently located in Park Royal, West London. We have three wards with a total of 145 beds, a 24-h resuscitation team, an in-house accredited laboratory, a GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) pharmacy and radiopharmacy, and full MHRA accreditation, allowing us to do all types of trials, including biological products (for our awards and accreditations, click here).

We have our own kitchens on site to make meals for our subjects, visitors and staff, so we can prepare meals to suit our Japanese volunteers’ tastes. We provide high-speed wireless internet and a large selection of Japanese and English language DVDs. We also have recreation facilities stocked with a wide assortment of Japanese language books, magazines and comics, and plasma TVs and videogame consoles. The positive experience our volunteers have with us makes them keen to return to HMR for more trials (click here to read comments from our volunteers).
